The community CAN make a difference. Get networked quickly via e-mail lists or facebook or whatever it takes. We have made a HUGE difference in NM by doing this.
ReplyDeleteIt all starts at the surface and how all of that waste is handled. We got a "pit rule" passed that protects ground water by enforcing "closed loop systems" in NM. Other states need to follow suit. This is a best practice already used widely in the industry. It is where I believe states should start. I've got data that shows closed loop systems are cheaper in the long run for the industry and for the state (who gets stuck with the clean up). This best practice will eliminate much of the problems PA is having.
NEXT, yes those frac fluids need to be disclosed. I worked in the oil and gas industry as an exploration manager for 20 years. I'm passionate about the subject because I know it can be done right with best practices and technology leading the way. The companies may fight this, but it is a win for them as well, protecting their liability/ futures as prudent operators in our states.
It is a fight that can be won.
