If we start from the yop, we have no need for the gas at this point, so fracking is pointless, then the technology itself has already proven to be dangerous in causing earthquakes. I live in California on the San Andreas fault and I know that quakes are not to be trifled with. Finally there are no guarantees in place and no legislation strong enough that will proect our water tables. We watch in horror as chemicals are injected into the earth and the effluent resurfaces containing things that are frankly undrinkable. There is a new and wonderful business selling opportunities to clean water from fracking operations just as there is a wonderful new business in returning oil spills to its original state. If we really need a BP Gulf catastrophy to prove that Fracking is a wonderful way to increase corporate profits and put a lot of farming communities on the auction block then have at it, otherwise please use your heads, pull them out of the sand, look areond and admit that fracking is a potential industrial polluter stronger than Bhopal.Peterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06188752817799759922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3191316279215320372.post-55264406631228279602012-06-15T11:24:33.048-04:002012-06-15T11:24:33.048-04:00Who knows. In the end, when all the data are in, fracking may turn out to cause little or no long-term harm, or an amount of harm that we can "live with" - collateral damage, as it were - as a cost of feeding our energy demands, which we do not appear to have much interest in reducing, and no interest in paying an increased cost (in currency) per unit. (By "we" I do not mean this group, but the nation, collectively deciding, albeit not necessarily well informed in making the decision.) So a few wells are contaminated, a few faucets catch fire. As long as my mains power still comes in at under $0.20/kWh, it's all good.

But what if it does NOT turn out to be the case that the damage will be minimal, but instead substantial, by anyone's measure? By the time we reach that conclusion and put a stop to the practice - the time between conclusion and cessation could itself take years - will the damage done be permanent and irreparable, even beyond the scope of the wildest prediction? Is this a gamble we are willing to take? Just how far will we go to satisfy our energy needs? My guess is, given the current trajectory, pretty much as far as it takes.Walter Bazzininoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3191316279215320372.post-15155709579746187032012-06-15T10:41:18.834-04:002012-06-15T10:41:18.834-04:00I'm sorry but the issues involving fracking ar...I'm sorry but the issues involving fracking are nothing but environmental fear mongering by the green energy lobby and are compleatly baseless. The technique has been around for over 40 years in one form or another with thousands of wells treated. There is no recorded incident if fracking directly damaging groundwater.Wayfarer1008https://www.blogger.com/profile/05742957376117543981noreply@blogger.com
