Ho...Good luck to Bob Martin and Governor Christie. How successful they are in breaking down NJDEP's ingrained anti-business bias and transforming the site cleanup and permitting processes will determine whether there will by any non-union, non-government jobs left in this state a few years from now. I can say from personal experience as one of NJDEP's newly minted "Licensed Site Remediation Professionals", that the cleanup process NJDEP has devised over the years is uniquely alarmist, inappropriately prescriptive, inflexible and costly. Most of the time, money and paperwork is spent on issues that pose no real risk. DEP policymakers have operated from within a cocoon, insulated from, ignorant of and unconcerned with the real world effects of their decisions (and indecision). All sites are assumed to be toxic nightmares until proven otherwise through a process which, though logical and step-wise, clearly does not achieve the peaceful coexistence between business and environmental interests that is sought. It can cost $100K or more to prove that a small commercial site is clean. Worse yet, the presence of coal ash or similar "historic fill" at a site can require an indefinite ongoing "relationship" with NJDEP, in the form of a soil remedial action permit (and its annual fee, of course). I could go on, but won't. I don't usually post as Anonymous, but given the circumstances here...well, you probably get it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3191316279215320372.post-2370324494415539182010-01-17T22:39:58.245-05:002010-01-17T22:39:58.245-05:00In what sense is he an "easy target"?
